Was interesting to find out then visit this settlement and learn of the community's involvement with The Underground Railroad and the value to this area. Would highly recommend this area to those visiting this area.
OUTSTANDING! 25+ Kickstands Up Motorcycle Riders from the Washington, DC area visited Mr. Richard A.Stewart' Pocahontas Island Black History Museum on 8/19/2017 . Mr. Stewart welcomed us immediately upon our arrival. He provided us not only an awesome and captivating oratorical presentation of his history on Pocahontas Island but also, the impact to blacks, Indians and whites during the Underground Railroad era and years later while adding a little humor to some very uncomfortable historical facts. Mr. Stewart's partner was very kind to not only provide us with paper towels to wipe our sweat but also ensured we had a very cool air conditioned parlor to relax while we listened intently to his historical presentation then, guided us through the museums unique display of historical artifacts.
Very educational to see history standing and in place for all Americans to see. Great visit.
You would do yourself a disservice to not visit this museum at least once -- and happily leave a donation to support his tireless effort to preserve and share Black American History with the world.
His Love for Black History exudes from the walls of this small building.
Important history not taught in school
Note: Unfortunately, the museum has not received financial contributions/donations from large organizations as many of the Smithsonian and museum in major cities. And, regardless of this setback, Mr. Stewart' dedication and love through his tireless effort to speak and provide you historical artifacts throughout this little building is a true reflection of his dedication to preserving our denied education on the truth about black history in america and life on Pocahontas Island.
WOW! So much history right here and most don't even know it exist. I took my sons on a walk of the historic Pocahantas Trail then we had the pleasure of going over to sit on the museum porch with Mr. Richard Stewart and had the best history lesson you'll never learn of in school. An invaluable experience that is highly recommended....we will definitely be helping in the preservation of OUR history.
